Refuge Overview: Established in 1992, Bayou Cocodrie National Wildlife Refuge, located near Ferriday, Louisiana, was originally purchase by The Nature Conservancy form Fischer Lumber company, a subsidiary of General Motors Corporation. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service purchased the refuge from The Nature Conservancy over a period of 5 years, using Federal Duck Stamp dollars to help fund the acquisition. The refuge is now 13, 168 acres.

| Wildlife and
Habitat: Bayou Concordia National Wildlife Refuge
protects some of the most pristine remaining bottomland hardwood
forest in the Mississippi River Delta, and has been designated
as a State of Louisiana scenic river. The bottomland provides
critical habitat for migratory waterfowl, resident wood ducks,
breeding neo-tropical song- birds, and a variety of shorebirds.
Louisiana Black bears (federally listed as threatened) and white-tailed
deer also inhabit the refuge. |

| Recreation Opportunities: Bayou
Cocodrie National Wildlife Refuge offers a number of opportunities
for public use. During appropriate seasons, the refuge is open
for fishing and hunting. Nature trails also make the refuge ideal
for hiking, environmental education, and wildlife observation and
photography. |
